The ice in the Arctic is melting (see, for example, Greenland today), with severe consequences for the region and the globe. Sea level is expected to rise and even the current still small rates of rise are already impacting many coasts, including Hampton Roads. On Earth Day 2013, many people participated in the first screening of the documentary “Thin Ice” on all continents and in the Arctic and on Antarctica. The film by Simon Lamb and David Sington (New Zealand) communicates the scientific understanding of anthropogenic climate change and its impacts. For information on the film, see http://thiniceclimate.org/. ODU's Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative (CCSLRI) together with the Office of Intercultural Relations (OIR) organized a screening of the documentary on September 26, 2013, which gave the ODU community and the wider public a chance to watch and discuss this important film. After a brief introduction, the film provided stunning evidence that the climate is changing rapidly, and underlined the possibility that climate model predictions very likely are underestimating the full extent of the climate change we are already committed to. After the film screening, a panel discussion “Make your Voice Heard” provided the opportunity for the audience to engage in a discussion with experts from a range of different fields. The Panel members included a social scientist, city representative and a student representative. The panel members included:
