The Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative (CCSLRI) at Old Dominion University has a Post-Doctoral position available, with a research focus on decadal sea level forecasts. The CCSLRI is an interdisciplinary initiative at ODU aiming to create the science, technology and innovation knowledge required to cope with the climate change and sea level rise challenging the communities at the coasts of Virginia and beyond, and to communicate this knowledge to a wide range of societal stakeholders. The position is in the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and the successful candidate will work with the co-directors of the CCSLRI. The position involves interdisciplinary research on local to regional sea level changes at interannual to multi-decadal time scales, the detection of non-linear contributions, and the development of predictive capabilities at decadal time scales. The Research Associate will contribute to research related to climate change disaster risk, vulnerability, resilience and adaptation of the urban coast and participate in the development of an interdisciplinary and comprehensive modular model with the goal to produce decadal sea level forecasts for the US East Coast. Other responsibilities include supporting the supervision of graduate students, authoring and co-authoring scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals, participation in the communication of research results to societal stakeholders and in the planning, organizing, preparing for, and carrying out of CCSLRI workshops both within the US and internationally.

Applicants must have a PhD in Oceanography, Earth Sciences or a related field with a dissertation topic relevant to modeling of complex systems. A high level of proficiency in scientific writing in English is required and a strong peer-reviewed publication record is highly desirable. Considerable knowledge of modeling of interannual to multi-decadal climate processes under large uncertainties, proficiency in Linux and programming in Fortran and/or C++, acquaintance with Geographical Information Systems, and some experience in the communication of complex scientific knowledge to societal stakeholders are desirable.

Please submit curriculum vitae, statement of interest, and the names, telephone numbers, and addresses (postal and email) of three references to Elizabeth Smith. Screening of applicants will commence on September 1, 2013 and continue until the position is filled. For questions related to the position, please contact Hans-Peter Plag.
