WORKSHOP

MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION RESEARCH IN VIRGINIA

August 11-13, 2015
Hilton Garden Inn, Suffolk, VA

ABSTRACT

Mitigation and Adaption Research in Virginia Workshop: Existing Research and Research Gaps

R. Michael Robinson, Center for Innovative Transportation Solutions, Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center, Old Dominion University

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identifies sixteen infrastructures critical to national security. To varying degrees, all are impacted by climate change and sea level rise (CC/SLR). All are included within the Mid-Atlantic region and specifically, within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Though CC/SLR research has been conducted on individual sectors, multiple sectors within the Mid-Atlantic have little if any region-specific work completed. Even less work has been completed on interrelated impacts – how climate change produces cascading effects across infrastructures. This presentation provides a brief overview of CC/SLR impacts on critical infrastructure, discusses current related research within the Mid-Atlantic region, and suggests a means for improving the breadth of analysis.
