WORKSHOP

MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION RESEARCH IN VIRGINIA

August 11-13, 2015
Hilton Garden Inn, Suffolk, VA

ABSTRACT

Interactions between climate change and land use land cover changes in Virginia

Hua Liu, Department of Political Science and Geography, Old Dominion University

Climate change has gradually influenced the land surface structures, e.g., residence, industry, and agriculture. Land use land cover changes (LULCC) affect both ecosystems and socio-economic conditions, and has become an important climate influence. The interactions between climate change and LULCC can potentially influence the biodiversity and landscape patterns. Although no substantial changes in land structure have been identified across Virginia over the past 20 years, some notable LULCC processes were found at various localities in the state, especially some urban cores and their surrounding areas, and also along the coast. Limited research has been conducted to address the interactions between climate change and LULCC in the state of Virginia. Future studies should better understand the fundamental mechanisms behind the interaction effects in Virginia. In addition future work should explore more comprehensive analytical methods in addressing these interactions in the state.
