WORKSHOP

MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION RESEARCH IN VIRGINIA

August 11-13, 2015
Hilton Garden Inn, Suffolk, VA

ABSTRACT

The next step in adaptation and mitigation research: integration, communication, and participatory learning

Anamaria Bukvic, Virginia Tech, Urban Affairs and Planning

This presentation addresses the scientific disconnect between the actual hazard risks, risk perceptions, and willingness to develop and implement effective mitigation and adaptation policies observed in some high-risk communities. Moreover, considering mitigation and adaptation solutions are highly contextual and their effectiveness depends on different locale-specific socioeconomic and geophysical circumstances, translating them into actionable and policy relevant recommendations may represent a significant challenge. Bridging this gap between science, household decision-making, and policy/planning responses calls for truly innovative, creative, and engaging risk communication efforts and policy mechanisms, development of customized decision-support tools, and participatory learning among all stakeholders. Therefore, this dialogue explores possible paths to bridge this gap between science and its application, as well as opportunities that could emerge from this integration, particularly for local stakeholders.
