WORKSHOP

MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION RESEARCH IN VIRGINIA

August 11-13, 2015
Hilton Garden Inn, Suffolk, VA

ABSTRACT

Decision Support and Practice-Relevant Research: The View from the User Side

Joe Bouchard

Climate change presents a wide range of difficult challenges to planners and policy makers. The complex science and the very nature of scientific inquiry provide opportunities for pedagogues and special interests to generate sufficient doubt in the minds of the public and their elected representatives to build a consensus on a sustained course of action on climate change. This is particularly true for action on mitigation, but also impacts adaptation efforts. Planners and policy makers, who are driven by the lack of a strong consensus on climate change to seek as much certainty as possible on current and future conditions impacting their work, are confronted with a plethora of data sources and analyses, yet have only a limited ability to determine which are best suited to their needs. This presentation will explore the data and analysis needs of practitioners, as well as the challenges they face determining and acquiring what they need, and offer suggestions for enhancing the practice-relevance of research.
